iTunes help needed.

iTunes is killing me. Sure it has some cool features but geez I miss using Media Player.

Anyways… here in the office we all use iTunes so that we can share songlists and such. MY PROBLEM is that iTunes is constantly expanding to full size from my taskbar (XP Machine) and taking focus from whichever application I am using.

Not too bad if all you’re doing is browsing the web. REALLY BAD if your typing a monster Functional Specification or Proposal and realise that the last four paragraphs you’ve typed have been lost to keyboard shortcuts in iTunes.

Someone help me. I can’t find what is causing it and am at my wits end!!!

I need to share my collection of metal with the rest of the office.

UPDATE 21 July 2006:
OK, the problem has been resolved by deactivating the iTunes toolbar from the windows toolbar.

  • Why dontcha just leave it in mini-mode matey?
Ctrl + M from full mode is the nice quick way to do it.

There’s a few other options but this is by far the easiest.

  • Doesn’t help. Focus still shifts to mini-mode. I also have “on top” disabled.

Geez I hate apple and their fluffy idiot focused systems.

  • Is this focus shifting for each new song? Sounds a bit whack to me.. I can absolutely say in the 12 months i’ve been using it, i haven’t had that as an issue.

What version of iTunes are you runnning? Maybe a fresh install would sort the problem.

Or maybe you’re just cursed for having such poor taste in music. :p

  • latest update today.
focus shifts every 30 seconds or so
    sometimes more
    sometimes less

    first time for me too

    Hey Rob,

I’m having the same problem. And it just started doing this as of this morning. I did a right click on the Tool bar. Chose “Toolbars” from the context menu. iTunes is not selected in the list. Is this the method you used to disable this behavior? Or did you use some other method?

    Thanks - Brent

  • Hi Brent,

This is exactly what I did.

Earlier I’d tried to disable the always on top option within iTunes and a host of other things. The thing that worked for me was disabling the toolbar as you’ve mentioned.

I’ve since re-enabled the miniplayer and always on top and it is all good now.

Just FYI I am using a XP Pro Dell machine.

Does anyone know what I can do to get iTunes without internet access? I was given an iPod Shuffle, but I have to borrow a computer to use iTunes because I don’t have internet access at home. I tried to burn a copy of iTunes onto a CD, but either I don’t know what I’m doing, or it just won’t work. Any suggestions?

  • quick solution, nerf iTunes and install a real media player like winamp…if you have an iPod like I do then you can synch with windows media player 11 (i think)

    “Down with idiot proofing!!!”

  • Robert - you’re an idiot. I’ve never had a problem with iTunes, and i’ve had no problems keeping the little sucker in my windows lint tray.

gimme iTunes over WMP anyday - i’d prefer pretty and useful bloatware over MS’s pretty useless offering.

  • OK, so it’s obvious that you didn’t read the post then?

You’re looking for a fight aren’t you fairy floss?

  • matt

Hey Maren, WMP won’t work (i don’t think) cause of compatability issues… seems M$ doesn’t want to work with Apple.. strange huh!

Your easiest bet would be to find someone with an iTunes installation CD that comes with an ipod and borrow it to install it on your machine at home. Alterntively, go for one of the compatible clones out there which are easy enough to find with a search on google.

The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have the write permission for this file, please help me

I’ve disabled the iTunes toolbar and I’m still having the same problem. In fact, it’s taken focus twice as I’ve written this!
